What is a Jesus Generation?

Print Friendly and PDF

Psalm 22:30 A seed shall serve him; it shall be accounted to the Lord for a generation.

This verse refers to a seed as a group of people who have been birthed out of their loyalty to Jesus who will make up for the fact that He died 7 years short of a full generation 40 years. To the Jews 40 years was a generation, and He died at age 33. But his ministry is entitled to 7 more years of fruitfulness.

Those years will be filled instead by his followers who live and work for His kingdom.

A Generation is 40 Years

Non Jews may not understand this. Many Westerners think 20 years is a generation but the Jews made it twice that because even though children enter adulthood at 20, they do not reach maturity until well after that and then they become productive. They also have a chance in those years to provide offspring, considered a goal of life by Jewish leaders.

For the Christian those offspring are supposed to be followers of the Lord, continuing the generation of Jesus and his overpowering influence on a fallen world. In other words “religious apples” fall off the tree as well as genetic ones.

Today the generations are as follows: Millennials – born between 1984 and 2002. GenXers, born between 1965 and 1983. Baby Boomers born between 1946 and 1964 and Elders born prior to 1945. These generations all have distinct qualities, leaders, opinions, histories and consequently are reached by different ministries.

The Speed of Life

There is some cause to define these as 20 years rather than 40 because the speed of life has increased exponentially, due to the rapid expansion of technology. Previous culture and centuries saw little or no changes. It would be unthinkable for us to discuss, for example, a Hundred Years War such as they had in England.

Since Jesus is an eternal being and since his ministry is also eternal, the 7 years of his entitlement can spread over many hundreds of years. God has a different view of time. https://wouldyouconsider.net/2014/11/15/gods-view-of-time-kairos-and-chronos/

Not all believers are part of this seed as many of God’s people are non-obedient. Believers will be judged on the basis of their obedience to the word of God. Heaven will be a very interesting place.
