What you say is what you gits
If you say that you must remain sick or cannot be healed because of your genes, then you have given a solid reason for not being healed. God counts above all things what comes out of our mouths.
“Confession is made unto salvation,” translated means, whatever you say out of your mouth will result in your life condition. If you confess health, you will find it. God is listening. If you confess sin, disease, defeat, lack, inability, whatever, that becomes your reality. The library is filled with Christian books on this topic, like Hung by Your Tongue.
Your identity comes from God not Man
Programs like “Love Yourself” or Image Classes rarely have much long time effect because reality is what God says you are, not what you tell yourself, or others tell you. It is a trap of either despair over being ignored or bullied, or high-minded conceit over unwarranted praise.
But neither is health a matter of “Name it, Claim it.” Claiming and naming is a start but faith is what makes us whole. It can be our faith or, if we are in a giant mess like the paralyzed man being lowered through the roof, it can be the faith, confession and prayer of our friends.
To suggest that genetic tendency towards alcoholism or any other weakness determines whether we drink or not is to say that the power of fallen man is greater than the power of God.
This well known passage:
2 Timothy 3:1 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. 2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, 4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; 5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
In other words it sounds good (Godly) but it’s the natural man speaking. Man’s weaknesses and sins do not define God’s limits or abilities.
“John is such a terrible drunk he can never be delivered.” This kind of public statement is just like someone saying, “Mary has 6 months to live.”
Man gives prognosis, God gives diagnosis
According to whom? People, doctors, friends, relatives all have a prognosis; this is not maliciousness, it is medical and realistic, but the Christian is a member of another kingdom and falls under its special rules and promises. To say that one’s sins, however received, genetically or because you choose to sin, do not make God a prisoner of His creation. Besides, He has promises for the faithful.
Shame on me – I have lost count, literally, of the times God has healed me, but He never could have if I said it was because of my mother’s genes, or the government, or my church, or any other external cause.
Of course genes are real. If you have blue eyes, you didn’t get them from your next door neighbor. The Ancestry program on PBS is fascinating for showing the people they investigate how closely related in interest and attitude these people are to long-forgotten ancestors.
I met my father’s youngest brother for the first time when I was way past retirement age and we were finishing each other’s sentences!! What a shock. I did not grow up with my father in the home, and I also never finished the sentences of my mother’s family. Clearly, I had a genetic connection to my father much more significant than that of my mother’s people. But that is not the Kingdom of God; it is still the natural world. And when we ask for divine healing we are looking to the supernatural.
We must beware as believers that we don’t agree with our friends when they use this genetic alibi. We are to be in agreement with whatever God has to say about the situation. Some pastors and denominational rules are based on man’s failures and merely endorse them.
Jesus has another set of genes for us
You’ve heard it said. “Poor Joan, she can’t help being a gossip.” Or “Poor Andy. I guess stealing is in his blood.” Of course it is in his blood. The blood of fallen man. Whatever happened to the blood of Jesus? Jesus came to change defeat to success; His blood did it.
The salvation on the cross covers everything Man needs, but we must look for it, believe it, and embrace it.
