Some groups ignore the Old Testament. Would you consider this? You pick up a James Patterson novel, open it up in the dead center and read to the end. Would you understand what is going on? Probably not.
You don’t start a novel in the middle of the book
The same with the Bible. The New Testament explains the Old to a great extent. In fact in Corinthians it says
1 Corinthians 10:11 Now all these things [in the Old testament] happened to them as examples, and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages have come.
Admonition means a place where you make the motion to go! This is the way to go. In this respect the New is explaining what the Old means in practical, active terms. In fact, much of the Old Testament tells us how “not” to do something, examples, being Samson, David, Solomon, as well as all the wise things they did too. We wonder how to act, and they show both the good and bad decisions and how that affected themselves and others people’s lives, and yes, even history itself.
Proverbs – best advice for everyone
Billy Graham reads one chapter of Proverbs every day. Get your kids to do that and you’ll see a change in their behavior. You may have to supervise that in the beginning. Most kids, esp. teenagers, have no interest in being obedient.
The Psalms are wonderful but reading them limits what you can know.
The begat section is a bore, I know, but it reminds us that God knows everyone’s name, including yours. And He is keeping track of His people and what they do.
Special promises to orphans
The Old Testament has many promises that are not seen in the New. There is a special promise to orphans and abandoned children; many kids today not only feel abandoned, they are. But God is watching.
There is a promise for those people who support Israel and the same promise for those who support God’s people, and He does not just mean church leaders. President Donald Trump blessed Israel and he is entitled to special blessing from God.
There is the promise for women dumped by their husbands, a whole chapter in fact. There is a promise to fat people. No, I am not going to tell you where they are.
There is a special blessing for reading the book of Revelation out loud. Who knew?
2 Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.
Every one of God’s words, regardless of where they are recorded, is not going away; all are effective and active until the end of time, and we are not there yet.
