What God calls Abomination?

Print Friendly and PDFYou can find this word in any dictionary but it is used frequently in the scriptures to define something that God hates.  The picture I prefer is this – an abomination is like a filthy, smelly, putrid rag, wet and bloody which you pick up with rubber gloves and, at arm’s length take to a trash can or better yet, an incinerator.  There is Biblical evidence that this is a good definition of the word.  But to what does God refer?  What does He call an abomination?

A List of Abominations

Here are some abominations:

  • homosexuality, (Leviticus 18)
  • shellfish (Leviticus 11 shall be an abomination to humans not to God, including some birds and insects),
  • gold and other precious items associated with false gods, (Deuteronomy 7 which also brings a curse to a family if it is brought into the home),
  • slaughter of children which would include both before and after birth
  • study of false religions in the same chapter
  • such persons who do these things are not permitted inside the community as well.

That means none of these are allowed in heaven.  In fact anyone caught doing this was, in the Old Testament stoned, with stones, not drugs or alcohol.

In Deuteronomy 22 and 23

profits from whores are not allowed in the church treasury.

Proverbs 3:23 calls

perversion an abomination, but it not only applies to perverse actions but also to people who, no matter what God says, go the other way.  Anyway – you can look this stuff up yourself.

Here is a list of spiritual sins that God hates:

16 These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:17 A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,18 An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief,19 A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.

That list must include American television, newspapers and other media which have become unreliable, and deliberately lying and withholding important information.

1 Kings 14 calls

sodomy an abomination, including male prostitution.

Proverbs 17:5 says

those who justify the wicked and condemn the just are an abomination to God.

I see that all the time in politics.  I wonder if these guys are aware of what they are doing?  There is a pay-day for everyone.

What about the vendor who has hidden weights on his scale?  He is under the knife on this too.  Praying to God when there is known evil in your heart is an abomination to God also.  (Proverbs 28:29) If we do not know about our sin we have leeway in God. He is not unfair.

There are many more.  Right now someone is saying – but I am under the New Testament – these abominations do not apply to me!  That is false comfort.

God’s word applies to everyone everywhere

God’s word is settled in heaven, and it applies whenever and wherever it is a reality.  The response is not “oh, this does not apply to me” but the response should be, “Yes, it may apply to me and I’d better be about repenting double quick.”

Forgiveness does not change the past, it covers it

Whatever sin is under the blood is forgiven.  To be forgiven never changes one word of what God said or meant.  In fact, it confirms it.  The Law does not go away – it is just overcome by a higher law.

So that list of abominations could also be a list of what God forgives.  Years ago when I was teaching at a woman’s prison there was an inmate named Betty who knew God and was still rebellious.  I said to her in 1975, partly in jest, “Don’t be caught dead without Jesus.”  A year later she was released and I learned she was shot dead in Charlotte, NC.  I often wondered about her?  Did she make it?

Unforgiveness ties God’s Hands

There are sins that one can easily call unforgivable. I think of Christian children in Syria, Israel, Iraq and Gaza who have been beheaded by the Islamic horde. To ask a father and mother to forgive these demon swarms seems like asking too much.

However there is a secret to forgiveness about which most believers are not well-taught. God cannot exact vengeance or retribution without your prior forgiveness. Of course, He Himself may decide that an evil is so egregious that He acts to bring down judgment all on His own. I believe we can expect to see that happen.forgiveness image

God has a special hatred for killers of innocent children. Whole societies have been judged because of what the Bible calls the sin of Molech.

Leviticus 20 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Again, you shall say to the children of Israel: ‘Whoever of the children of Israel, or of the strangers who dwell in Israel, who gives any of his descendants to Molech, he shall surely be put to death. The people of the land shall stone him with stones. I will set My face against that man, and will cut him off from his people, because he has given some of his descendants to Molech, to defile My sanctuary and profane My holy name.

The god Molech demanded the sacrifice of children and the penalty to the parent or relative was death. This is serious business.

Egypt, after it slaughtered the Hebrew children roughly between 1290 and 1440 B.C.E. was never again a world power, even until today. The same is true of the great Roman Empire. What happened to it? They slaughtered about 6,000 Hebrew babies when Jesus was born and poof – in no time they are a dim memory on the European continent.  Italy came back after it endorsed Christianity. In the expanse of history one learns that God not only is not dead, He isn’t even napping.

How does this work? Simply put your unforgiveness ties His hands. He would like to judge and bring vengeance but you are standing in His way.

Romans 12:19 Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord.

When He says “it is mine” He means, “it is not yours.” The principle is simple but for many it is certainly not easy. We all marveled when some women who were snatched and trapped as sex slaves said they had forgiven their captors. Years of slavery in someone’s dark, wet basement is worse than any time ever served in Alcatraz. Yet it is possible to do so. Forgiveness frees you – and places them, whomever they are – on God’s hit list. It may take some time for us to see the results.

In my own memory I’ve had to forgive some very nasty business – theft, slander, revenge, rape. In most cases I have later learned of some ghastly judgment they endured that had nothing at all to do with me.

God does that by the way. He may be judging them for sins against you, but He doesn’t let on. That is because you gave up your right to judge them. One man lost his ministry. A woman had an accident so unusual and so disfiguring I can’t contemplate the pain. However these two had a long list of victims, unbeknownst to me.

God is not accountable to tell you what He has done or what He will do in your case. It was several years in both these cases that I learned through mutual friends of their troubles. Because once He takes your case, you are off it. He becomes your attorney and the Judge. Stand back and watch the judgments of the Lord.

As I write this I believe we can apply this to the terrorists who are wreaking havoc across the globe, and coming to our Texas border. We are not asked to let them in, or refrain from fighting them with every ounce. We have a right and a responsibility to defend ourselves against what is Satanic.

But having said all, stand and see what God will do.
