Why Study History

Throughout history governments and individuals either succeed or fail due to how well or how poorly they manage the levels of power between them. So the smart student who does not want a pile of work studies history because it continues to repeat itself. They need only memorize the names of the leaders and their various nations and data which changes from decade to decade. Some smart math student could create an algorithm to show at what point this never ending conflict will move in a different direction. History does not know the word status quo.

Governments limit individuals, and individuals seek more liberty.

This is the conflict in a nutshell, balancing the strength of the individual and the long arm of the government. When there is no balance, the nation is out of whack. Every bureaucracy withdraws some liberty from the individual which does not make it wrong, unless it is too much liberty being given up or it was confiscated. The arguments against socialism include this quote from Ben Franklin,  “Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.” Liberty lost is very hard to regain.

Every political contest involves these two elements

History shows this clearly. The lone cave dwelling human and his family is a government at the lowest level, but for any progress to be maintained, warfare against a predatory neighbor requires that these family units gather together to form a mutually advantageous group. To do this requires that each person give up to the group some authority, power, and of course money and resources. It requires a leadership team as well. If the team or the leader becomes too strong the society stagnates; if the enemies gain ascendancy, the society breaks up. So the larger the governmental unit, or the more prosperous in the case of the USA, the stronger that group is.

A closed society stays that way

For smaller societies constant mismanagement of resources and unrest keep it in failure mode. Afghanistan has been involved in war for 60 years and is going nowhere. They cannot or will not negotiate a balance between the bureaucracy and the individuals in spite of considerable involvement from other nations, both for good and for ill. It was illegal to teach women for example. The USA forces repeated efforts to stop that and start schools for girls met with guns and knives. This is in spite of well-documented proof that children raised by educated women are more successful than those who are not. But then today’s men would need to be educated before they would know that wouldn’t they? So a closed society stays that way, forever in poverty, isolated and legitimately afraid of their neighbors.

Participatory democracy balances interests

Governments that function best keep this in mind which is why participatory democracy works so much better. When people take part in their government they can cut it down when it gets out of hand. That explains the election President Trump and Boris Johnson.

Today institutions are under fire

Other nations are also seeing their citizens rebel against bureaucratic intrusion. The European Union might be blaming other nations for their inertia but their own institutional bias caused these problems. Some economic prophets say the EU will eventually end, or there will be European anarchy. It all depends on whether leadership comes to the fore to negotiate a peace. Today, 2019, across the planet citizens are increasingly resisting government intrusion and laws.

People locked into institutional mindsets scoff at the “populists” and right wing labels for everything they do not like but when you scrape away the paint, you find it is the age-old conflict between individuals and institutions. In Venezuela the bureaucracy and the army stayed put, and the population left. They became refugees to other nations. In Syria, the government simply bombed the citizens who questioned its behavior. The nation is a pile of rubble today. Both Iran and Saudi Arabia are in a standoff but both nations thought they could embrace and calcify the past. Can’t be done. Time marches on with or without you.

Literature confirms history

This is not new. The Greek drama Antigone (circa 440 B.C.E.) covers the same turf. Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet shows how private lives were damaged by cultural considerations, which describes much of European history. The USA has managed to keep individualism front and center even though is has gone to extremes. For example, there is no scientific basis for gender reassignment and this will eventually collapse. It is individualism run amok. When individualism gets out of hand it is called anarchy which degenerates into civil war.

Imperialism is a form of war

Roman Imperialism, British Imperialism, Soviet Imperialism and now Chinese Imperialism all began as economic adventures and developed into chattel societies. All but the Chinese variety is gone, and even that is being tested.

The Pacific Rim is tired of being used; Vietnam was the first communist government to resist the long arm of Chinese presumption. Now Hong Kong is conducting its own, largely successful protest. Of course there are thugs and hooligans involved in all these conflicts because those loners just love a fight, but underneath there is real angst which must be corrected. The individual has suffered too long. The pendulum will swing back but today it is all about war against institutions.

Why History is superior

In my experience there is nothing scientific about Political Science. Politics is often called an art because the individuals must balance the competing interests of diverse and often intractable participants. The Bureaucracy Loving among us do not realize how difficult this is because they conceive as governments having always the bayonet to make their word stick. Individuals have no weapons but they have a voice. The Baltic States won their freedom in the 1990s by singing! They sang in unison and the Soviet masters were too cowed to take them on in spite of their tanks, guns and bayonets.

Investigations of corruption

Currently in the United States the hubris of the Washington Bureaucracy is increasingly under investigation – the CIA, the FBI and the DOJ all involved in an attempt to overthrow the presidency of Donald Trump. The evidence is mounting. Nervous journalists are wondering whether they can personally afford to touch this. Will it mean an end to their career? They could be too close to the bureaucracy and endanger their jobs.

You see how this works. The Deep State is an example of how institutions become enemies of their own governments and people. Many nations do not have corrective options in place. Because of American diversity and freedoms we can handle this kind of corruption, in spite of it taking a great deal of time.

The Prince of Peace

Finally, this blog is about the Mind of God. The Greek plays predate Christianity, so it is not a religious issue, unless you believe the government is God, and some do; or perhaps you believe each individual is god, and that happens as well.

The Bible clears this conflict up for the individual. In the world of the God directed person, God is the government. He makes the decisions based on an omniscient mind and directs the person in the way he or she should go. It is a tricky little dance to keep oneself in the will of God and skirt or affect as the case may be the world and its Institutional vs. Individual war. It means living in the multiverse of the spiritual about which I will have much to say in the future.

God supports Nationalism

The history of Man is one war after another, for land, for slaves (workers), for treasure under the earth, for ships others have made, or simply for bragging rights. Today we see Israel struggling against many millions of Muslims surrounding her tiny nation ready to gobble it up if they only could, but they won’t and they can’t.

If you read the Bible – and God jolly well believes what He wrote – you learn that the nations, their boundaries, their peoples and their languages are all pre-programmed by God. Israel is confident because she knows her nation was designed by God and He will protect it. They have to do the fighting of course, but they know God will guard his people.

Would that China knew this. Here is the verse of scripture.

Acts 17:26 From one man [Adam] he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands.

China stole Tibet many years ago. It does not belong to them and the Tibetans are still mad about it. China fully believes she can take areas over without penalty, also Vietnam and Inner Mongolia. There has never been a real peace in those areas where China has her paws. Why should there be? If you are bucking God’s plans, do not be surprised to find out YOU are the one in trouble.

Japan tried to take sizable portions of China and did not get away with it. Japan was in China a long time and caused a great deal of trouble but in the end, she was gone and returned to her natural homeland. Right now Japan is looking to Mongolia for more land. Mistake!

Do not tamper with other people’s borders. America is finished with adding states. She has protectorates, tiny areas that fear neighbors will try to invade, but 50 is the number for Freedom and 50 states is a good stopping place.

Why Soldier Suicide – Culture Clash

As thousands of soldiers waited in New York City in 1943 for the troop transports for Europe they saw the rousingly popular musical Oklahoma! and got one last taste of American life, often to die on D Day the following June.

Those soldiers knew what they were dying for –“wind sweeping down the plain,” for carnivals, and romances and grandma’s apple pies at the state fair. They were dying so a nation enduring two theaters of war would survive, for little churches which preach God and country and faithfulness. They expected to come home – many did not. They had hope in their future and confidence that their service would preserve their homeland. They expected the girl they left behind to be there for them. And so did she.

That soldier no longer exists – but he still goes off to war, and he comes back – and kills himself? Why?

The answer is almost too easy. It is not simply because the family farm has been sold, the state fair is mostly auto shows, the church has been preaching diversity and his parents are divorced. That is bad enough in itself. But the man himself, just a boy really, has no roots in real America. His moral judgment has been tarnished by a wanton and indifferent culture, by teachers who praise marginal students, by gutless courses, and paper mache theologies. The man with roots in the real America is not there any more.

But he goes to Afghanistan and finds a culture that is supremely confident in itself… a male enemy and his religion that not only have open contempt for law and order, but also women and family, an “alpha” male society based on the scruffiest principles of overblown ego and violence. He has a new male model for himself. He is in awe of men who can kill a woman at will, or lock little girls in a school and then burn it down. Violence in the home is common, even applauded. This is power! In the clash of Muslim-American culture, he is co-opted and returns a totally different person.

The sweet little thing he married leaving two children to rear has been running her own show for a year or more. Her authoritarian ways, her final decisions, her paying the bills, discipline, repairing the car – what happened to his male headship – out the window! The romance of being an alpha Muslim male which he picked up in the violence drenched desert takes over. Bang – the kids are dead, or his wife, or in final frustration, he copies the Muslim model of worship of suicide. He is a trained killer, after all, and he kills himself hardly realizing that suicide is a public confession of failure. Like Hitler. He is a now one-more-sacrifice to a foreign god.

In the 1980s a revealing PSTD study of Vietnam Veterans and female rape victims showed their trauma and symptoms to be identical. The study put the two groups together in a successful therapy. The main trauma was betrayal- the woman betrayed by a trusted male and the soldier betrayed by a slothful government. Today’s soldier has no more trust in an appeasement-government than the soldier of the 60s. It is friendly political fire to disarm the soldier in the presence of live ammo and committed foreign foes.

The battered wife in Dayton, Ohio has a better chance of survival in a half-way house with her kids protected by agencies and police than guys in Fallujah once did. No one had their back! But if he takes on the coloring, the morals, the standards of the death-obsessed Muslim, he has a new identity and possibly survival. He regains a sense of self, however false and unworkable.

Attempting to correct this after he returns is a mammoth job when it could be more easily addressed before he ever goes. Despite the sincere efforts of the armed forces bureaucracy to bring “readjustment’” the results are minimal because the effort is at the end, not the beginning of the deterioration process. They must learn that their Western God is not dead – He’s not even sleeping.

This is not complicated. Train the warriors in American values, constitution and morals before they face the enemy as victims, not later. If young soldiers do not know who they are to begin with how can they be restored to a place that never was.

Solders need a moral foundation based on clear-cut historical reality so the man who fights in 2012 is as well prepared to face his enemies as the man of 1944.

Perhaps with a new President who values and encourages the armed forces things will change and soldier will again take pride in what they are doing and why.

Jesus Was Not Politically Correct

In a day when people tippy toe around the truth as though it was social cyanide, “what would Jesus do” is radical and unacceptable.  But that should surprise no one – Jesus was unacceptable and unaccepted.  Still, He continues to be the standard for us and our age.throw-moneychangers

Jesus’ focus was on the Temple in this passage since that was His House and Father God planned the Temple for prayer not commerce.

John 2:12-17 After this incident, Jesus, accompanied by his mother, his brothers and his disciples, went down to Capernaum and stayed there a few days. The Jewish Passover was approaching and Jesus made the journey up to Jerusalem. In the Temple he discovered cattle and sheep dealers and pigeon-sellers, as well as money-changers sitting at their tables. So he made a rough whip out of rope and drove the whole lot of them, sheep and cattle as well, out of the Temple. He sent the coins of the money-changers flying and turned their tables upside down. Then he said to the pigeon-dealers, “Take those things out of here. Don’t you dare turn my Father’s house into a market!”

If He did this today he would be jailed at the very least for disturbing the peace if not assault and damage to property.  Jesus never damaged people; He turned over the tables not the people managing them. Jesus saves humans but He does not necessarily save systems, or governments.

He only acted on principle; in this case the love of money as the root of all evil (1 Timothy 6:10) was the source of the problem. Modern rioters murder for their cause and feel justified. But the use of violence to promote a righteous claim never works; it only promotes more violence.  Think of Black Lives Matter here.

Jesus takes on a host of leaders who contaminate the word of God with lies and deception. Matthew 23:16-30

16 “Woe to you, blind guides, who say, ‘If anyone swears by the temple, it is nothing. But if anyone swears by the gold of the temple, he is obligated.’ 17

Swearing was and still is a form of verification of one’s word.  In court we swear on the Bible; some Christian denominations refuse to swear on anything because the Bible specifically opposes that.  Your word should be sufficient.  Of course for those who want to lie, nothing makes any difference anyway.

But swearing on anything makes no sense.  In no way does it confirm or deny the what was stated.  Furthermore the Lords of Swearing have made yet another rule for living.  You can always tell when a government is failing by how many worthless and futile rules it has.  (more…)

God’s Opinion of National Identity and the Brexit Vote

No doubt you assumed God had no opinion about things like this, but once again, if we look into the Bible carefully, we find a slew of dicta regarding national behavior and identity, and not just in the Old Testament.

God does not want world government.
God does not want world government.

First of these is the clear national individuality of nations.  Globalization and world government were a major goal in the early years of the planet which resulted in mass confusion.  This happened at the Tower of Babel where everyone at that time spoke the same language and joined to contest God for sovereignty of the world.

Genesis 11 The Message (MSG) “God Turned Their Language into ‘Babble’”

11 1-2 At one time, the whole Earth spoke the same language. It so happened that as they moved out of the east, they came upon a plain in the land of Shinar and settled down. They said to one another, “Come, let’s make bricks and fire them well.” They used brick for stone and tar for mortar.

Then they said, “Come, let’s build ourselves a city and a tower that reaches Heaven. Let’s make ourselves famous so we won’t be scattered here and there across the Earth.” God came down to look over the city and the tower those people had built.

6-9 God took one look and said, “One people, one language; why, this is only a first step. No telling what they’ll come up with next—they’ll stop at nothing! Come, we’ll go down and garble their speech so they won’t understand each other.” Then God scattered them from there all over the world. And they had to quit building the city. That’s how it came to be called Babel, because there God turned their language into “babble.” From there God scattered them all over the world.

Well, that was just the first of the disasters.  God scrambled the languages and the people scattered all speaking something “foreign” and confusion lasted until today. That should remind us that President Obama’s and the Democratic Party’s emphasis on world government will no doubt fall into ruin.  But it is pretty hard to tell anyone at the high levels of politics that they are headed the wrong way.

Acts 17:26 TLV From one He made every nation of men to live on the face of the earth, having set appointed times and the boundaries of their territory. (This is not a Godly endorsement of predatory imperialism.)

Britain has chosen to renew its independence from the European Union, a much better functioning Babylon, but still rife with ills, and hopefully Britain will regain some of the moral high ground it has lost.

So, God has a mission for every nation, and a territorial boundary for them too.  Nations have a Godly identity.  So far I’ve seen almost nothing written on this topic. Tiny Estonia is an interesting case.  Under the boot of the Communist Soviet Union (union maybe but not unity, lacking personal or political freedom) the people started singing.  Yes, singing.  Slowly but surely groups became larger and larger singing the old, popular songs of the nation.  When European communism collapsed in the 1980’s Estonia was unified and regained its ground without a shot.

Remember when Paul and Silas were in jail and they started singing?  An earthquake caused the bars of the jail to collapse and they were freed.  So this singing oneself to freedom is not some new thing for Estonia. (Acts 16)

Clearly, the USA has a specific call which she has met.  Preachers often fume over why God has not blasted this nation off the map, but then we look at the stats.  There are many internet sites showing American charitable giving, which should not be confused with national foreign aid some of which does not go to anything other than political figures or causes.  But overall Americans are the most generous people on earth, and continue to be a military aid to some nations in trouble, depending on the President in charge.  Nor do Americans take land or slaves after they have buried their dead soldiers in foreign soil. One of the most astonishing and unique events in world history is the Marshall Plan to put Germany back on its feet after World War 2.

God blasted many nations not only off the earth but off history entirely for abortion, which continues to be an international scourge. In Canada and the USA, abortion rates are 18 per 1,000 births; 26 per 1,000 for  Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Iran, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan; 28 per 1,000 Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Cyprus, Georgia, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syrian Arab Republic, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, Yemen; Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Cote d’Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Saint Helena, Senegal, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Cote d’Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Saint Helena, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Togo, China, Hong Kong, Macao, Korea, Japan, Mongolia; 29 per 1,000 Belize, Costa Rico, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama; 32 per 1,000 Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Falkland Islands, French Guiana, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay, Venezuela; 36 per 1,000 Angola, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Sao Tome and Principe,Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Vietnam,Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Aruba, Bahamas, Barbados, Bonaire, Saint Eustatius, Saba, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Cuba, Curacao, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guadeloupe, Haiti, Jamaica, Martinique, Montserrat, Puerto Rico, Saint-Barth, Burundi, Comoros, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mayotte, Mozambique; 43 per 1,000 Belarus, Bulgaria, Czech Republic , Hungary, Poland, Republic of Moldova, Romania, Russian Federation, Slovakia, Ukraine.

Biblical nations which served the god of child sacrifice Molech that are no more are the Hittites, Canaanites, Jebusites, and the list goes on.  It is a warning to modern nations; you have no guarantee of permanence.

When I started, I’d not intended to focus on abortion but some interesting things have emerged.  First, babies go to heaven. (Yes, it is a big place.)  From these statistics, the ethnic background of the residents of heaven will largely be non-anglos.  That will match the international statistics as well.

Second, we notice that formerly communist and communist block countries have larger abortion rates.  This tells us that bad government has a definite impact on abortion rates, no doubt mirroring the poor income levels.  Millennials so intent on bringing socialism to the USA should pay attention here.  Socialism is communism without a gun to your head; the dictatorship comes later after they take your cash.

Third, abortion rates are a general barometer of poverty rates. People really do want to have children.  We know that America is in a 8 year slump despite political protestations to the contrary because birth rates have gone down!  Marriage rates and employment rates are way down too.  God likes peace because with it we gain prosperity and a future.  But there is no peace for the wicked. (Isaiah 48:2)

Finally there such a thing as goat nations. Matthew 25:31.

31 “But when the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, then He will sit on His glorious throne. 32 All the nations will be gathered before Him; and He will separate them from one another, as the shepherd separates the sheep from the goats; 33 and He will put the sheep on His right, and the goats on the left.

34 “Then the King will say to those on His right, ‘Come, you who are blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.35 For I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger, and you invited Me in; 36 naked, and you clothed Me; I was sick, and you visited Me; I was in prison, and you came to Me.’ 37 Then the righteous will answer Him, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry, and feed You, or thirsty, and give You something to drink? 38 And when did we see You a stranger, and invite You in, or naked, and clothe You? 39 When did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’ 40 The King will answer and say to them, ‘Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me.’

Matthew 25:41 “Then He will also say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels; 42 for I was hungry, and you gave Me nothing to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me nothing to drink; 43 I was a stranger, and you did not invite Me in; naked, and you did not clothe Me; sick, and in prison, and you did not visit Me.’ 44 Then they themselves also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not [e]take care of You?’ 45 Then He will answer them, ‘Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.’ 46 These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

Christians who avoid voting need to take this seriously.  Our nation, all other nations, will be judged by the mercy shown to others.  We need to see some sermons on this!
